Our History

The Society of God's Reign (Latin: Societas Dei Regnum - SDR) is a Catholic Religious congregation. It is currently a 'pious accociation' (as an initial canonical requisite - Cf. CIC. 301, 1 ff) under the patronage of the Bishop of the Diocese of Vellore.

It was founded by The Most Rev. Dr. A. M. Chinnappa SDB D.D Ph. D., former Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore. The Congregation is the result of inner call he recieved from the Holy Spirit! He prayed over it for a long time. On April 22, 2011, Good Friday, he felt the Lord’s clear 'yes'. After taking counsel from several good persons and eminent theologians he started the congregation.

The official start of the congregation was on August 24, 2011 when the Most Rev. Dr. Soundararaju Perianayagam SDB, Bishop of Vellore issued a decree errecting the society as a Public Association in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Vellore.

Our Charism

Charism is a special gift or grace from the Holy Spirit given to the Society through the Founder of a religious congregation or institute by which its members are invited to live their calling and consecration. Every religious group has its own charism with which it co-operates with the Church and in its own way for the coming of God’s Reign. In other words, the charism determines the mission.

Our Charism is:

Let the oppressed go free...

Luke 4:18

The main mission of the Congregation is to work for the oppressed, downtrodden and the marginalized.

Our Spirituality

Our spirituality is rooted in deep devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist and Unfailing Love to our Blessed Mother. Our Founder, being a Salesian of Don Bosco, carried with him the spirit of Don Bosco and planted it into the Society of God's Reign. This way we – the SDR Friends – can be called the grand children of Don Bosco.

Along with this SDR Friends, as we are known, are suppose to be humble because their master Jesus Christ humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross! (Phil 2:8 ) This, our founder calls as the Spirituality of Servanthood.
